Outsourcing Our IT Department

Posted By Admin on April 30, 2008 @ 3:49 pm

I know that most people don’t care for companies that outsource departments of their business.  But for the small company that we operate, it really didn’t make much sense to have many different staff for positions that we needed, but were not critical to our success.

Many of those departments such as Payroll, Human Resources, and our IT support were smart departments to outsource.  Though we did need the resources presented by specialists in these areas, we didn’t need them all the time.

The biggest example was our IT department.  It seems that we rarely have an IT problem (knock on wood), but when we do, all we have to do is pick up the phone and someone will help us out.  It has definitely made a difference to the bottom line of our company by reducing our staffing expenses.

It is nice too that our employees understand the reasoning behind the outsourcing - it makes the workplace a friendlier environment when they know we are not trying to get rid of them.

Lining Up Contractors for Home Flip

Posted By Twyla on April 29, 2008 @ 9:23 pm

A buddy and I have found a jewel of a property in Tampa that we are going to renovate and flip.  We usually don’t buy property out of driving distance of our hometown, but we just couldn’t pass up the deal that we found.

We have already been down there to inspect the property and we have developed a vision of what we are expecting the final "product" to look like.  We know that we will make a good profit on the sale, now all we have to do is make it happen.

Looking online for "General Contractor, Tampa", we have found a few potential candidates for the renovations that we need.  We are going to go meet them in person in a couple of days, see what they think of the place, and make our decision from there.

I just hope that we haven’t set a schedule that is too ambitious - we would like to have the house back on the market for sale in sixty days.

Taking Care of my Car

Posted By Twyla on @ 10:06 am

All my life, I knew that I wanted a fancy sports car one day. The day that I bought my Diablo was one of the best days of my life. It was a sweet car and I loved the looks that I got when I drove it. It was sad when I had to lock it up in automobile storage for the winter.

All winter long, I worried about my car. I had scary thoughts about someone breaking into the automobile storage unit and doing something bad to it. It was such a relief when I was able to take it out the next spring. I had that great feeling back. It was like me and my car were one.

I stressed to the company that they should beef up security of their automobile storage units. They treated me like a paranoid first timer, as they said nothing had ever happened to any of the vehicles stored there. I thought, though, that there was a first time for everything.

Figuring Out Trip Cost to Las Vegas

Posted By Admin on April 28, 2008 @ 10:48 am

I have always wanted to go to Las Vegas and I think that I am finally going to make the trip.  But before I go, I have been trying to figure out how much it is going to cost me to go there.

Most of my research that I decided to do was going to be done online.  I figured that it was the most time effective way to figure out prices and would save me the trip down to the local travel agency.  Not only would I be able to check out the prices of our travel agency, but I could check out other deals online as well.

While looking to find out the prices of many of the Las Vegas hotels that I wanted to visit, I found a website that had a list of current Las Vegas hotel deals.  Some of the deals that were going on at the time that I was expecting to be in the fine city were amazing.

The only thing that I wish is that I would have found a site that had all the airfares in one place… but I might just have to keep looking.

Opening a New Branch Over Seas

Posted By Admin on April 27, 2008 @ 9:47 am

Our business has been doing very well in North America, and we have decided that it is time for us to expand our operations.  We have been considering opening an office overseas, but we wanted to get some professional advice before we did that.

We went to an accounting firm to learn how you go about company formation UK.  It was going to be our first company outside of our home country, and we were sure that the rules would be different.

And we were right.  The rules were significantly different.  While we were there, we also learned about the process for UK VAT registration - something that we would have to register for before we opened our doors.

Needless to say, it is going to be a bit of paperwork before we can open up shop in the UK.  But, we will be getting our lawyers and accountants get things setup, so there is not much work for us to do.

Newspaper Article About Shortage of Workers

Posted By Admin on April 26, 2008 @ 7:37 pm

I know that we have been experiencing a shortage of workers in our community, and that businesses have been offering many incentives in an attempt to keep and recruit new workers.  Most of these incentives can include signing bonuses or earlier acceptance into the health insurance policy at work.

There was an article today that indicated that the shortage of workers was even spreading to industries that you would never consider to have worker shortages.  A good example was the shortage of circus and fire entertainers.  This has caused many circuses to drop acts and venues altogether as they don’t have the manpower to do it.

Even though there is this shortage, there seems to be no one that can come up with a solution.  I wonder how long the worker shortage will last - we might just end up seeing businesses closing doors due to lack of staff.

Spring Break

Posted By Twyla on April 25, 2008 @ 4:18 pm

My cousin, her young daughter, her mother and I decided that we wanted to go on a cruise together. We decided that since we were four females traveling alone, we would go for a tame cruise line. One that would hopefully be full of senior citizens. It was suggested that we travel with Princess Cruises, so we booked our trip.

We flew to Miami to board our cruise, thinking that it was going to be calm and quiet. Boy, were we wrong. We happened to book during Spring break and the cruise ship was full of college students who were there to party it up.

We decided to make the best of it and we ended up having the most amazing time. I would do it again in an instant and I felt nothing but safe the whole time we were there. In fact, I am currently saving for my next one and I hope to go this winter.

An Awesome Lunch

Posted By Admin on @ 1:14 pm

The only word that comes to mind about the lunch today at the marketing seminar is awesome.  It was perhaps the best meal that I have ever had in my life - and I am stuffed.

It definitely was better than yesterday’s food as they changed catering companies due to the number of complaints.  The food yesterday was cold and tasted horrible, so I am happy that they changed their minds today.

I asked one of the event catering employees which company they worked for.  I was sure to jot it down on paper so that I would be able to call them for our next corporate event.

I think that they will be doing supper tonight as well, so I just can’t wait.  I will just have to make sure that I don’t do any snacking during the afternoon, so that I can eat as much supper as I want.

Exploring Storage Facility Upgrades

Posted By Admin on April 24, 2008 @ 3:35 pm

Having owned a self-storage facility for a number of year, I do have some experience as to what to offer customers when it comes to a place to store belongings.  We have had excellent success with storing regular household belongings, cars and RVs.

But there have been a number of customers of late asking if we offered yacht storage units.  We are within half an hour of a large lake where many people have yachts that they use during the summer.

I had never considered adding yacht storage as one of our services before, but the more that I thought about it, the more I realized it would be a natural fit to our business.  Besides, it would increase our revenue over winter months, which is nothing that I would complain about.

So, I will be adding a yacht storage unit or two during summer, so that we will be better able to cater to our clients during the winter season.

Looking for Affordable SEO

Posted By Admin on April 23, 2008 @ 4:39 pm

I wouldn’t say that I am cheap, but I am a bit frugal.  This is especially true when it comes to my business.  I want to get the best return possible with the least investment.

So, when it came to me looking for an organic SEO service, I was a little shocked.  You see, most companies charged an arm and a leg to get the work done for you, and it looked like many of them were scams.  Looking on many forums, there were red flags regarding many companies, and I didn’t want to get ripped off.

Going on the same advice that I had found in the forums, I found an affordable SEO company that could help me out.  They were highly recommended and one of the least expensive ones online.

After trying them out, I was very happy with their service and the increase in my search engine rankings.  It didn’t hurt that I would attribute the one big sale I had the week following the work they had done for me to them.
