One of my jobs as a financial advisor is to help individuals and families that are saddled with large debt. I have to come up with debt diet plans on an individual basis for each different family that I am working with. I have to treat each case differently as each family is in a different situation.
For the most part, I discuss with them how to reduce credit card debt, as that seems to be the situation that often plagues most individuals or families. It is one thing that can get out of hand very easily if they are not careful with their spending. It is easy to lose control if credit is too easily accessible.
I also deal with a lot of poor credit debt consolidation for people who are on the verge of bankruptcy. It is often easier for them to know that they have another option and that they can get out of debt with a few changes in their spending habits.
