In the past few years, a winegrowing area has emerged inside the provinces of Castile and Leon, which these days is one of the most favorite areas in Spain.
The name “Ribera del Duero” derives from the river Duero, the vineyards are dispersed over 2500 square miles (4000 km2).
Since 1982, the area has had the title of a “Denominacion de Origen” (D.O.). The Ribera del Duero enjoys a combination of microclimate, terroir and a red native grape that produces superb, complex red wines. At this altitude the grape Tempranillo (also acknowledged as Tinta del Pais or Tinto Fino) results in a thin-skinned and refreshingly acid fruit, which in turn gives birth to wines which are delicious when they’re young but also have the capability to age into magnificent Gran Reservas. Ribera del Duero offers a broad range of styles in the straightforward “Tinto Joven (young wine)” up towards the well-known ” “Pingus”.
Each of these wines constitutes a part from the fascination raised by “Ribera del Duero”. Those who love Spanish red wine simply can’t ignore them. Who prefers which kind of wine, is really a question of personal preference.
The climate on the region is continental-mediterranean. Summers are rather dry and hot, with temperatures as much as 40 degrees, whereas the winter season is bitterly cold. Also you will find higher differences in temperature between night and day. This slows down the ripening procedure from the grapes and optimises their acid content. Probably the most famous grape of this region is called Tempranillo. Tempranillo is the star of the Spanish variety of grapes. It generates higher top quality wine with a balance between alcohol and acidity, ruby red colour and extremely fruity wines, from the “tinto joven” towards the “Gran Reserva”.
