Parties that show little or no preparation will not please your guests.  There are rules for entertaining: good food, good drinks, and atmosphere.

Even casual parties need to serve fresh food.  Finger foods are the best because there are no utensils that are needed so there would be less of a clean up afterwards.  Serve the finger foods on a tray so you don’t need to run back and fourth from the kitchen.  Take time for yourself to enjoy what you’ve prepared.

Never ever serve canned beer.  Good wine is easy to find by asking at your liquor store.  Never think that saving a few dollars by getting wine in a box will be ok.  It is always a good idea to have some liquor in the house anyway, just in case you have guests drop by that like to have a drink or two.  

The atmosphere is made up of three main things; music, lighting, and decoration.  There needs to be music at every party.  Where there is good music there usually is dancing, and parties are a lot better if there is dancing.  Cool mood lighting in-sync with the music encourages everyone to dance.  If you’re holding parties often, checkout dimmer switches at your local hardware store.

Establish your party theme by decorating the main party gathering point – the food and drink table.  If it is a theme party you are having then you need to decorate accordingly.  Many party stores will help you find all the decorations for your theme you will need. But don’t go tacky..

Pictures are a very important part of every party, so don’t forget your camera.  Pictures help people reconnect over fond memories, so take lots.  Pictures also help to remind you who to send thank-yous to.  Expensive digital cameras aren’t necessary to take stunning party pictures.

Often spending time with every guest isn’t possible, but make sure that you have fun.  You’ve worked hard to prepare, so make sure to enjoy.
