Moonstones Or Gems Fictional Writing Tips Blog

Good dialogue is essential to a great work of fiction. With it, an author can reveal to the reader who the characters are without having to tell them. We can give characters unique ways of talking, certain phrases they like to repeat and have the characters interacting with one another. Like the moonstone, dialogue should be smooth and should reveal important information that furthers the plot.

From the very beginning of my writing career, I have had little trouble in the area of dialogue. I hear the characters in my head and write their dialogue just as they talk. It comes so naturally to me that I had to analyze some of my work to find out how I actually do it that makes it flow and seem real.

Despite having read dialogue over and over again in books, what I didnt have down naturally was the punctuation. Enough of the format was imprinted into my mind that I could remember that the quotes go outside the end punctuation, but my end punctuation and when to capitalize and when to not capitalize tags tripped me up. A speech tag is the part before or after the words spoken, such as what he said or she said.

When I found out that I had been doing something wrong in my dialogue punctuation, I searched the internet and found a lot of drawn out and confusing web pages about it. I did find one site that explained the punctuation so simply, with easy examples, that I was able to get it and within two days, I had wiped out all my habitual mistakes. Now, when I am editing for new authors, I send them this same link: Dialogue Punctuation Made Simple.

There are a few things to remember when writing dialogue. There must be a new paragraph each time another character speaks. When three or more people are in a scene, use speech tags or action to indicate who is speaking. When having a long scene with dialogue, mix up where speech tags are and have action tags that give the reader a visual of where the speakers are and what they are doing so you can avoid the talking head syndrome.

Example of dialogue. Four-year-old Jack held the delicate sand dollar up to show his older sister. Is this candy? Candy? asked Brooke as she took it from him. No, its a sand dollar. Oh, Jack said, is it a fruit? No, its not a fruit.

Brooke sat down on her beach towel and placed the sand dollar on her knee. Jack plopped down in front of her and ran his fingers through the hot sand. Is it a fruit? No. Its not food. This is the skeleton of a dead animal. Jacks little gasp and wide eyes made Brooke giggle. Why did you want to know? Jack sighed and in a small, sad voice said, Because I just licked it.

Some people find it helpful to write out only the words spoken in a scene of dialogue and add in the tags and actions later. The most important thing is to play around with dialogue until you feel comfortable writing it and it is believable speech. When in doubt, please read the scene out loud.

If you have some tips or suggestions about dialogue, a question or a comment about this article, Id love to hear from you. Visit my fictional writing tips site today.

How To Write a Great Headline

Posted By Anthony James Goolsby on @ 7:52 am
by Anthony James Goolsby

Writing a great headline requires magic… or at least that’s what some people believe. Good writing is merely technique mixed with talent. Good writing is a highly sought after skill, and it pays well.

Joe Sugarman is a legend in the world of copywriting. His number one rule is that every single sentence almost forces the reader to read the next sentence. Your headline should promise a benefit to the reader. Your article should support that promise.

Appealing to your reader’s emotions is crucial. You must understand their wants, needs and desires and create emotional and passionate copy. A great heading is punchy and short and quickly conveys your article’s main premise.

You don’t have to be funny or creative. In fact, it’s actually better if you’re not. Your headline should almost never be clever or cute… you’ll rarely pull the reader that way. (One of my funniest was Roasted Penguin Tastes So Good It Would Make Gandhi Slap His Kids! It was cute; it was clever; and it failed miserably.)

You’ll want to spend some time mastering this ability, as it is an art. Not everyone can successfully craft attractive, eye-catching headings. The good news is that by developing this ability, you’ll leave your competition in the dust.

Like a good song — harmony and music working together — your heading should be in-sync with the story you’re trying to tell. Appeal to the readers interests and satisfy them.

Good headlines should be active. Make them short and say only what they need to say to cover the topic. They should convey the number one benefit to the reader. The copy that follows should be plain and simple paragraphs that support that benefit, as well as giving more.

Getting attention is the main objective of a great heading. Think of it like a pickup line in the clubs… if you don’t get slapped it just might get you a few more minutes to tell your story.

Don’t get me wrong. Funny headlines can sometimes work. I’ve used them myself. But they work best offline, like a direct mail piece. Online you want to think about how people use the search engines. I promise you no one is typing in your clever headline, so the chances of it being seen are nil. They’re using keywords… words relevant to what they want. So use the same words to attract them. And you’ll get the added benefit of higher rankings from Google; they’ll see you as more relevant. Good stuff. After all, higher rankings means more traffic… and that’s what you’re trying to get, right?

The Big Obstacles Bloggers Face

Posted By Brenden Arnicke on May 19, 2009 @ 3:31 am
by Brenden Arnicke

It’s totally true that blogging can be a blast, but there also a few issues that bloggers have to deal with. The key is to keep yourself aware of them. This way you’ll know how to fight the issues. As a result, you’ll become a superstar blogger, with much more to show for your efforts.

The three problems most bloggers deal with include:

Too much time in front of the computer, repetition of other’s work, no focus.

Let’s tackle these one-by-one!

Number one is the burnout issue. Then you got going, you were probably very excited to start blogging. You were set in your mind that you were going to blog hard! You also likely thought that the payback was going to be quick. However, it soon became clear that you were going to be talking about the same topic repeatedly, which can get tedious. You also realized that this is going to take time to get rolling.

It’s fine to feel frustrated! You should know, however, that these feelings are what can make or break you as a blogger. If you give up, you’ll never know what it’s like to be a successful blogger pulling in great money. If you persevere past this frustration you can be extremely successful! The majority of bloggers give up, so make sure that doesn’t happen to you.

The next most common problem is sameness. This simply refers to the fact that it can be hard for bloggers to find their exact “niche.” Sure, you know what your blog will be about — you might even have it very targeted. That doesn’t mean your blog will stand out from the crowd!

So that you can get a strong fan base, you must do something that will put you ahead of others. You could run give-aways, write in a unique “tone” that includes a sense of humor or other kinds good penmanship, or just do something that is crazy and totally different – usually this endears many readers.

Finally, the last problem many bloggers face is the lack of focus. We’ve already discussed that it’s hard to stay motivated past the early stages, and this problem often leads to a lack of focus. You started out writing a blog about weddings, but you quickly got disenchanted and start blogging on a different site about sports instead.

This just comes back to you need to keep going. Just realize that even if you can’t put your heart into this topic – jumping around from one subject to another one is only going to slow you down from reaching your objective.

There are, of course, other problems that bloggers face as well. The difference between those who do well and those who give up is their determination. If you are determined to earn enough income to replace your job, for example, you’re going to need to know that these problems are there and come up with a battle plan to banish them forever.

Don’t forget, blogging is great, but you’ll need a strong mentality to make it work for you.

Blog Traffic

Posted By Charlie Reese on February 19, 2009 @ 12:12 pm

How to ramp up your blog traffic and exponentially increase your readership

You’ve created a blog and you’ve got plenty to say. Great! Now, the trick is to bring in some sizable traffic! After all, unless you’re independently wealthy, you probably need to make some income. Competing with thousands, or tens of thousands of other bloggers, writing in a similar vein or topic, makes this a challenging goal. Here we go over some of the best moves you can make to increase your blog traffic and spread the word.

Make judicious use of the social networking sites. This is fast becoming a hot trend with bloggers. You’ve got to be careful to choose social networking sites that fit with your objectives. There are online comparison charts which allow you to see the main features and ratings of these social networking sites. Click through and browse around. Also check out some of the more obscure social sites. While their audience may be smaller, if their members fit the profiles you’re seeking, your ROI will naturally be greater.

If your blog traffic now consists of friends, family members and a few people who have wandered on to your site, you want to change this as quickly as possible! The more content you have, the better your page rankings become. So you definitely want to post every day, the more the merrier. New visitors are more likely to return when they see that your blog is active and has fresh content on a daily basis.

When you write a post, keep in mind that you want to create an interactive format, where your readers feel invited to put in their remarks. For example, let’s say you’ve written an opinion piece on politics. You might end the post with a leading question, such as This is where I’m coming from, but my perspective is certainly not comprehensive. What do you think? You’ll soon have readers telling their friends about your insightful posts. More blog traffic for you!

There are special types of posts that can really work wonders for your blog traffic statistics. You’re the expert in your topic, right? Write longer posts of a how-to nature. For example, if your blog deals with gardening and horticultural topics in general, write a piece that tells your readers how to graft cacti of two different species. Readers love to learn about how they can gain some specialized skill they can practice for themselves. These tutorial style pieces are standalone ” they are as valuable a year from now as they are today, to current and future visitors. As possible, write at least one of these every other week. Again, with this type of post, word of mouth helps grow your blog traffic more quickly.

Another good strategy to increasing your blog traffic is to find other quality blogs in your niche and write comments on posts by that blogger. If you comment frequently, those readers get to know you and are likely to start clicking through to see what kind of content you have. New readers!

Seek out websites with related content, an e-newsletter and a large subscriber list. Offer one of your best posts to that website’s owner, to run as feature articles in an upcoming newsletter. You’d be surprised at how many click-throughs you’ll get as a result.

Last, but not least, check out cafepress.com. This is a great word of mouth strategy that earns you money too! You create a design ” your logo, for example, or any design that speaks to your topic audience. Cafepress then prints your design on a coffee mug, t-shirt or whatever you choose. It’s sort of a POD arrangement, so there’s no outlay of cash until a sale is made. They provide a store setup and you sell the products on your blog!

Building your blog traffic can take some time. It’s up to you to implement the most powerful strategies.
