More Than Education is Needed. While I am 100% pro-education, especially when it comes to drug and alcohol abuse prevention, I do not think that education is the only solution or the only weapon that can be successfully used in the battle against college drug and alcohol abuse. Let me explain.
First, we have to look at being both proactive and reactive. With this concept in mind, alcohol abuse has begun to be dealt with in with many reactive and proactive measures at some colleges and universities. These measures have included the reducing of the availability and acceptability while punishing the irresponsibility of alcohol use on and off campus. The result has been a reduction of alcohol related problems started by students.
What are some of these measures? Establishing immediate consequences for excessive drinking, disciplining repeat alcohol abuse offenders, notifying parents about their children’s drinking activities, eliminating mixed messages by college administrators about alcohol (for instance, removing alcohol advertisements from stadiums and from sports brochures), informing students about the long-tern negative consequences of alcohol abuse, increasing alcohol-free social and recreational activities that are attractive to students, having college administrators talk to the owners of local drinking establishments so that minors and/or intoxicated students are not served alcohol, and monitoring the drinking activities in the sororities and fraternities.
Medical Research and Treatment Are Not Enough. I assert, however, that the above proactive and reactive measures, most of which are NOT education-based, are needed to compliment educational approaches. Why? I am enough of a realist to believe that even if medical research eventually discovers viable ways to escape addiction and if the medical community is able to offer effective treatment to all who need it, there will always be those who, for whatever reason, will choose to disregard medical warnings, ignore their health, and who will discount common sense as they involve themselves in alcohol and/or drug abuse.
Habits, whether good or bad, are actually (unconsciously) developed in the first place to meet one of our needs. A habit has a specific function and role. It is important not to overlook this role that habits play in meeting needs when attempting to break bad habits.
Lets take the example of biting fingernails. Many people have this bad habit. However we can see a pattern from it. Usually people will bite their fingernails when they are feeling nervous or uneasy. So biting fingernails is actually a medium in which people use to relieve their nervousness and uneasiness.
Now, if you kicked a habit but did not find something else to replace its function, your body will eventually have to go back to the old habit because that particular need isnt being met. Take the above example, if those people do not find an alternative outlet to release their nervousness and anxiousness, they will eventually go back to the habit of biting fingernails.
That is why you need to identify the function and purpose of a particular habit. What did that habit give you on a physical, psychological and emotional level? Which needs did it meet? How is it meeting those needs?
Understand that by kicking the habit, youre gonna lose all these things. When that happens and theres no alternative to replace it, our being will yearn to have it back on an unconscious level. It is at this time that the habit takes the chance to re-establish itself.
To know the function of a habit or the need that it meets, we need to know and assess the details of the habit. Look for and identify any recurring patterns that relates to the habit. Seek out indicators that point to possible functions that the habit may be meeting.
In identifying the patterns of a habit, you can ask questions such as when do you usually do the habit; what other thing were you doing at the time; where were you; who were you with; what happened before you did the habit; what time of the day was it etc.
After you know what the function of a habit is, you can then brainstorm ways to replace it. Come up with an alternative action that can adequately take the place of the habit. So if you bite fingernails when youre nervous, a good alternative would be to learn breathing exercises that can relax the body and use it whenever you start to feel nervous.
Look for positive ways to fill that gap and ensure that the replacement is effective and adequate. Only through doing that will we kick a habit for the long term.
