Nighttime Potty Training

Posted By Paul J James on October 21, 2008 @ 12:35 pm

For some children, nighttime potty training can be an easy and smooth transition from their daytime routine. For these kids, simply being able to conquer bladder control during the day develops their nighttime habits enough that they are able to stay dry the majority of the time. However, about one third of kids under the age of three still have accidents.

Proper Bladder Control-Give It Time

You may feel frustrated if your child is one of the many who have difficulty maintaining bladder control. But it’s not your fault, and certainly not your child’s fault. While they may have properly applied daytime bladder control, keep in mind that this is in large part a voluntary process. At night, however, despite the child’s best intentions, sometimes the signal from the bladder to the brain indicating that it is full simply doesn’t come through.

For this reason, a positive attitude is a must during nighttime potty training, just as it is during the day. Having a low-stress environment where the child’s self-esteem and well being are cared for facilitates the process of developing this communication from bladder to brain in the child. This means being ready to give positive feedback for every dry night and not holding them responsible for accidents-remember, children have no more conscious control over nighttime potty training than you have over snoring or turning over when you sleep. It simply takes time.

What Can I Do?

As a parent, you can create a positive atmosphere where both you and the child are taking action while the child is awake. This means limiting evening fluid consumption and checking to make sure they make a final bathroom stop before going to sleep. Synthetic sheets are also very useful for this as they make cleaning up after an accident a simple matter.

Having a no-fuss attitude about accidents-even if it’s in the middle of the night-is an essential aspect of proper nighttime potty training. You may not be thrilled to be up at 4AM changing sheets, but just remember that the child doesn’t want to be in that situation anymore than you do. You can mitigate any feelings of shame or embarrassment by staying cool and collected. Simply change the sheets, help them go to the bathroom one more time, and go back to bed. No big deal.

Nighttime Potty Training vs. Bedwetting

Did you know that it is considered a part of normal development to deal with nighttime potty training until age five? Because it is a matter of neurological development, most medical practitioners tend to distinguish between age-appropriate nighttime bladder control development and actual bedwetting. Bedwetting becomes the term used only when issues with nighttime potty training persist after age five, when you may want to explore other age-appropriate options.

Having consistently dry nights is usually the last hurdle of potty training. When your child reaches this benchmark, you both deserve a pat on the back and a celebration of your child’s final transition from baby to child.

Toddler Discipline - 5 Tips to Prevent Problems Before They Start

Posted By Harriet Morris on @ 5:31 am

There is a lot you can do to prevent discipline problems with young children. Read on to find out some easy ways to manage toddler behavior before problems have even begun.

Good Habits To Develop

Routines are good to develop with toddlers - they signify stability. This is very important. Why? Because stability helps toddlers make some sense of the big changes that they face between the ages of 1 and 4.

Make a list of the biggest behavior issues that you have with your toddler - then create routines to help deal with them.

For instance, make sure you dress (or help dress) your child straight after breakfast. Before long he or she will come to accept it - and even expect it.

Give The Child A Choice - Within Limits

Some form of choice gives young children a much-needed feeling of being able to control their life. It’s one of the things that separates them from babies and in many ways defines toddlerhood. Nobody is suggesting that toddlers should choose everything that they eat, wear and play with. What does prevent issues arising is giving children a restricted choice about certain things.

An example of limited choice is bath time. Avoid arguments over getting in the bath - instead ask your toddler which type of bubble bath he or she would like. Choosing creates a feeling of being a big boy/girl, as well as preoccupying the junior brain - they usually forget they never wanted a bath in the first place.

Diversionary Tactics

Distraction works so well with toddlers because of their short attention spans. Getting down on your knees and pretending to be a dog may seem foolish, but who cares if it averts a tantrum?

Be Cheerful But Firm

It is human nature for youngsters to test you out, no matter how well you divert their attention or put routines into place. Show you mean business but keep the mood positive - you don’t need to scream and shout - a stern look is far more effective.

Being firm with your toddler now is important in preventing problems when children get older - establish your ‘no-nonsense’ reputation early on. Being calm and cheerful helps toddlers cope with not getting their own way. It is important to model coping strategies in order to teach them emotional self-reliance.

Avoid the word ‘No’

There are 2 universal truths when it comes to parenting toddlers: 1. They love the word ‘No’; 2. They copy what they hear said. If they hear it, they say it.

Turn those negative statements around. For example:

“No more biscuits” becomes “Biscuits are finished”

“No running!” becomes “Walk now!”

“We are gentle” is preferable to “No hitting”

All these preventative measures work best in the long run - you might see an immediate improvement in your toddler’s behavior, or it may take a while. Don’t give up; change will happen.

4 Ways to Keep Losing the Baby Fat

Posted By Teresa Brown on October 20, 2008 @ 6:03 am

Truth be told, losing the baby fat requires living healthy regarding how you work, rest, play and of course what you eat. Weight loss is a battle between mind over matter. Once you get your mind on board, the struggle to lose the pregnancy weight will be less of a burden and more of a normal part of your existence.

Let’s admit it that we can’t help ourselves but marvel at how quickly those Hollywood mums lose the pregnancy weight. Unfortunately, this can make us feel even more depressed and vunerable especially when your reality is that your baby is now a toddler and you’re still carrying the excess pounds and then some.

Consequently, what is the quickest means to lose the pregnancy weight without a team of experts like the Celeb moms? Pregnancy differs from woman to woman and the same applies to losing the baby fat. The key is to live an active lifestyle where exercise is a normal part of your day.

1. Become and Stay Physically Active

As long as you have be given clearance from you doctor, you can start having fun and getting fit by signing up for a yoga or relaxation class for pregnant women. Low impact exercises like swimming or walking prepares your body to quickly lose the baby fat after giving birth. Frequent workouts will help you to lose the majority of your pregnancy fat within 2 months or longer depending on your body.

2. Breastfeeding

Breastfeeding helps some but not all women to lose the baby fat faster. Weight loss aside, breastfeeding ensures that you will maintain a well balanced diet for you and your baby’s health. Breastfeeding takes about 500 calories per day to feed your newborn and this will cause you to burn the excess baby fat to maintain the amount of energy you will require and use. But whichever way you choose to feed your baby, make sure you eat healthy foods and drink lots of water.

3. Watch your Pregnancy Weight Gain

Being pregnant is not a “free pass” to go a head and eat whatever you want. Have you noticed that the Celeb moms only gain “baby weight” during their pregnancy? If you maintain a healthy pregnancy weight, the more quickly you’ll lose the baby fat because most of it will be the baby and the placenta. Check in with your doctor to find out the recommended weight gain allowed for you and don’t go over it.

4. Maintaining a Healthy Lifestyle

If you can eat and exercise for your unborn baby, then you can choose to do so in order to lose the baby fat for yourself. Just continue what you started and you will be the better of emotionally and physically for it. Remember to check with your doctor before getting back into an workout schedule. Unlike the Celeb moms who have their carreer image as motivation, you have your baby, family and friends and you. You are worth the time and the effort.

Take advantage of your pregnancy and postpartum period by eating sensibly and keeping in shape. You will reap the benefits by having a healthy pregnancy, baby and being able to re-claim your pre-baby shape by losing the baby fat in a few months. Pregnancies come and go but a healthy lifestyle will keep the weight off and your sex appeal on.

How To Avoid Power Struggles With Children

Posted By Kim Patrick on @ 3:20 am

Nobody wins in a power struggle. They are the most unfruitful things we can do with our children, yet often as parents we find ourselves having a power struggle.

Recently I had a battle with 13 year old son. It was Friday and we had just arrived home from an evening out. Kieren’s friends wanted him to come outside and play in the dark in the park. it was 8.30pm when they called at our house. I just knew I was going to be in for a tough time. Kieren said to me,

“Mum, can I please go out and play with my friends?” I knew I was in for a tough few minutes with my son but I firmly said, “No, Kieren. We have already been out tonight. You are not going out again”. I waited for the back chat and I didn’t have to wait very long. “Oh, Mum, all my friends are outside and I’m going. You can’t stop me”. Silence. I thought for a few seconds and decided to repeat my first answer again. So I said to him, “You are not going outside tonight Kieren”. Then I walked away.

I could hear him becoming more and more disgruntled and talking out loud with his protesting but I quietly stood my ground. I had to endure about ten minutes of major protesting and a couple of door slams however he did not try to leave the house that night.

Now here’s the thing, Kieren was angry and I didn’t try to make him agree or be happy with my decision. He seemed to need a bit of time to cool down. You cannot expect a teenager to always say sorry straight away. Kieren went off to bed in a huff but the next morning he came to me with an apology.

Negative behaviors come about by the need to exert power and control over other people. Some of these common behaviors are: picky eating, dawdling, threatening. When you have a child exhibiting these traits you need to offer choices rather than giving demands. This will ease the pain of conflict and prevent many power struggles.

It is human nature to test authority. Most of us do it at some time in our lives. But when kids do it they are wanting to know that you will not waver in your boundaries. This gives them a feeling of security in their lives.

I have come to realize that as a mother of teenagers it is not always your job to be liked. Often children will hate you for the boundaries you give them, in the short term. But the very next morning Kieren came back to me with an apology.

And, by the way, when Kieren woke up the next day his door was off the hinges. I didn’t need to growl at him for the door slam; I just took action to teach him that it was not an appropriate thing to do, thus avoiding another power struggle.

Gold Body Jewelry - Is It Really Gold?

Posted By Jim Hofman on October 19, 2008 @ 4:49 pm

Most women prefer using gold belly button rings and body jewelry since gold is a symbol of beauty and abundance since ancient times. However, there are specific things to know before choosing gold body jewelry.

How do you know your gold body jewelry is really gold? It’s worth spending a little time to understand how you can make sure your gold body jewelry is pure, and not a substandard piece.

With body jewelry, you should look for 18 karat gold. The reason 18 karat is recommended for new piercings is there’s a higher chance the jewelry will be accepted by the body. When body jewelry isn’t true gold or the karat level advertised, allergies may result and you’ll need to remove the body jewelry.

Usually this occurs because the gold used for body jewelry is an alloy that contains other metals in addition to gold. Often, gold body jewelry is only plated with gold; such jewelry should never be used in piercings even if the piercing is healed.

If your gold body jewelry is only gold plated, it’s best to look for another option. Most gold plated body jewelry contains a high percentage of nickel, which gives you a higher risk for allergic as we’ve discussed.

Since gold in its natural state is quite soft, it’s very common for body jewelry manufacturers to use other metals along with gold to formulate a piece of body jewelry. For example, 14 karat gold belly button rings are just over half gold, with other metals comprising the remainder.

To avoid potential body jewelry allergic reaction, always choose 18 karat gold body jewelry. Most body jewelry you’ll see on the market is 14 karat gold, but 18k gold is also readily available. The less gold content, the less expensive. The downside, of course, is the high chance you’ll have to return or even discard the body jewelry.

Consider these factors when buying gold body jewelry:

1. Buy jewelry from a store with a quality assurance and testing program. These stores test their own jewelry for purity.

2. Look for a license stamped on the body jewelry if a trademark or logo is present, i.e. the trademark for a large company. If a trademark or logo is on your body jewelry but there is no license stamped on the back, your body jewelry is suspect in quality.

3. To make absolutely sure you’ve got legitimate gold, you can have the body jewelry tested at an independent lab for $20. Labs are available in almost every large city.

4. Under a jewelers scope, take a good look at the craftmanship. Are there rough edges? Frays? Imperfections?

Finally, make sure you understand gold terminology. 24 karat gold body jewelry is pure gold, and the highest quality. Other karat content are less than pure gold. 10k gold is less than 50% gold and is the lowest karat content that can legally be labeled as gold.

How to Lose your Tummy minus the Fad Diets

Posted By Teresa Brown on October 18, 2008 @ 2:52 pm

One of the contributing causes to the rising obesity epidemic in the western world is that technology has given rise to a culture of convenience and inactive lifestyles. This has a strong influence on what we eat and live and by what means we will take to lose the tummy. It makes sense then why we eat fast food and lose the weight with fad diets, because it’s the quick and easy.

The reason that the diet industry is a multi billion-dollar industry in the United States is that diets are a quick fix solution for a long-term multi-faceted problem. Being able to lose the pregnancy weight for the long-term seems simple on paper but it’s not a fast and easy task in reality. It’s time to pull our heads out of the sand and take responsibility for our actions to lose the tummy. It’s time to start living healthy.

Diets get you to lose your yummy because they reduce your caloric intake. Many of the popular diets often accentuate one specific food or type of foods to include or exclude from your diet thereby putting your body at risk of becoming nutritional deficient. They break the basic principle of good nutrition, which is to eat a balanced diet that consists of a diversity of foods. Here are two common diets that you should avoid.

Anti-Carb Diets

Diets low in carbohydrates such as Protein Power do not function as a lifelong diet because they are difficult to maintain and nutritionally unbalanced. Life is unpredictable and planning your life around your diet can make your life more stressful for you, your friends and family. Not to mention that because your body is working on low “natural” energy you are more susceptible to fatigue, insomnia and headaches.

It’s the types of carbohydrates you eat that matter and not the carbohydrate itself when trying to lose your tummy. Your diet should have less refined carbohydrates such as white rice, bread and pasta, potatoes and sweets and more carbohydrates from whole grains such as whole-wheat bread and whole-grain pasta are to be eaten more in your diet. And of course the fruits and vegetables fall in between the two.

Non Fat Diets

Eating a low-fat diet to lose your tummy requires that need to add something else to your diet and in this case it’s carbohydrates. Be wary of foods in the supermarket that claim to be “low-fat” as they are packed with calories in the form of sugars and will instead make you gain more weight.

The body needs fat to function. Saturated and trans fats are to be consumed “sparingly” while monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats are to be consumed more often. Different types of fat provide different functions in your body. For example an extreme low-fat diet would deprive your body of vitamins E, B12, and of the mineral zinc, all of which are found in saturated fats. Also, by having very little fat in your diet will reduce your body’s ability to readily absorb the fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E, and K and carotenoids which are required for healthy eyes, skin, bones, teeth and immune system.

Although these diets may get results for the short term, it seems pointless to lose weight only to regain it soon after the diet has ended. Dieting repeatedly makes losing pregnancy weight more difficult, which can lead to lowered self-esteem and feelings of frustration and failure. Losing your tummy for good will require that you live a healthy lifestyle. Find a lifestyle system you can be followed not for a week or a month, but for your whole life.

Understanding Causes and Effects of ADD/ADHD

Posted By Victor Raff on @ 1:41 pm

The exact causes of ADHD are not know yet. It is known that ADHD is connected to the brain’s neurotransmitters. Chemicals that the brain uses are called neurotransmitters. Two of these chemicals are called dopamine and norepinephrine.

When a child has ADHD it means the level of dopamine and norepinephrine is abnormal. The abnormalities in the levels of the neurotransmitters are caused by both biological and environmental factors.

ADHD is linked with causes like: Prenatal exposure to cigarette smoke, even smoke in a child’s nearby environment, Premature birth, Lead poisoning, Usage of substance during pregnancy (Drinking alcohol, cocaine, other drug), In the early stage of development having low iron, high blood lead, significant under-nutrition. And rarely: after a serious brain infection / trauma to the brain.

ADHD can be treated with medication that controls symptoms. The most common medications are methylphenidate (Ritalin, Concerta), dextroamphetamine (Dexedrine), pemoline (Cylert), atomoxetine (Strattera) and Adderall- which a combination drug. The effects of these drugs are seen in the patient’s increased attention and focus or concentration. A decrease in impulsive or hyperactive behavior can also be seen. These drugs should only be used with doctor’s advice and recommendation.

Most parents want to know how they can help their child. ADHD children crave structured environments and need to know what is expected of them. Having the teachers, parents and doctors all working toward a common goal will greatly increase the effectiveness of a treatment plan. Talking with and ADHD specialist will also benefit the family. Counseling is also a good partner to medication for a lot of children. The key is to keeping lines of communication with your doctor open and well used.

More Than Sperm Donors: Top 10 Things New Dads Must Know

Posted By Christy Cuellar-Wentz on @ 11:00 am

1. I doubt you were a great lover your first time out, so why would you expect to know how to be a great dad without any practice? You may not know it yet, but fatherhood can be a lot more fulfilling than donating sperm! Relax, give yourself some time to learn, and have some fun along the way.

2. Hands-on fathering is good for you, your partner and your baby. It’s not just about changing diapers. Feeding, bathing, holding and talking to your little one helps you bond together and gain essential on-the-job training.

3. Your wife will be herself again. Yes, she is probably on duty 24 hours a day with baby on the brain. No, she probably isn’t much fun right now. But life will return to normal as the three of you adjust to your new situation.

4. It may look like all your wife cares about is the baby, but she actually needs you. A lot. The amazing person you coupled with nine or ten months ago is right there inside the stressed-out new mom. Stay close and keep the faith.

5. Your sex life may have taken a nose dive, but you will be able to engage in some adult fun, with your wife, soon.

6. Postpartum disorders are no one’s fault. It is normal for new moms to experience some sort of postpartum mood disorder. It’s not your fault, or hers either. Some symptoms are temporary. All are treatable.

7. Sleep can help more than you realize. New moms generally have the toughest time with sleepless nights, but dads can be sleep deprived as well. Finding creative ways to help each other get a little more rest can make a big difference.

8. Your instincts are probably correct. I bet you’ve had more than your share of people telling you how to deal with your baby. Check your gut, ask your wife, and tune in to your baby. They’ll tell you nearly everything that’s important for you to know.

9. Your baby needs to play with you. Here is a case where having fun is the right thing. Playing stimulates your baby’s mind and body to develop in healthy ways. You may feel more playful right now than your wife, so go for it.

10. The advent of a new baby is stressful. Even miracles create challenges. Things should get smoother with a little time. If your lives don’t get better, or if you or your wife feels worse, ask for help!
