Why is breastfeeding in public an issue? It seems breastfeeding in public has undergone a lot of criticism over the last few years without good reason. Its clear that its not an issue of practicality but of the conscience. There are so many different opinions over this controversial issue but its pretty clear that its because of the breast is related to sexuality which creates an awkwardness to expose it in public. The breast was intended to feed babies and this should be the reason why it is morally sound to feed in public. Breastfeeding moms should know their rights and freedoms to breastfeed their baby in public. This issue has been debated by legislators and activist groups in all 50 states. Some examples are as follows: A mom can feed her baby on state property in Virginia. In Puerto Rico a woman can breastfeed in any public establishment such as public service centers, airports, government buildings, malls and so on. There are some states that have designed specific laws that require every public restroom to provide a separate area for moms to feed their baby if they so choose. These restrooms are also required to have separate changing station as well.

Both Mississippi and Louisiana have laws that provide guidance for child care facilities. Both states have laws that state that daycares cannot discriminate against breastfed babies. They must, by law, have a sanitary area provided for the breast milk and a special refrigerator to hold it. They are also required to train their staff on how to handle and store human milk.

Louisiana and Mississippi are the only two states that have laws related to child care facilities. In Louisiana it is prohibited for a childcare facility to discriminate against babies being breast-fed. While in Mississippi license childcare facilities are required to provide a sanitary place. That is not a toilet stall for mothers to breast-feed or express mail. In addition, they are required to provide a refrigerator and train staff in the proper storage and handling of human milk. To promote breast-feeding, Maryland has made the sale of tangible personal property, manufactured exclusively for the purpose of supporting, initiating or sustaining breast-feeding from the use and sales tax.

For breast-feeding mothers it may be embarrassing to feed their child in public only because it has been made so through news and advertising outlets. By knowing the laws in your state, you will be prepared to ward off any unwanted attention or threats by police or other officials.

This summer home is filled with acceptance, love, encouragement, and true, down to earth friends who you will end up calling your camp family. Your counselors act as parents, older siblings, etc. They are great people to look up to. The campers are great friends for life. You may even end up looking at them as siblings. Acceptance is everywhere, no one kicks you out of the cabin because of who you are. Your uniqueness is celebrated. This is the main reason why I love Swift Nature Camp…it’s so much more than just having fun.

When you’re not on canoe or backpack trips and just at camp, there is so much to do, you can never fit it all in. Other fun activities to do at camp are archery, swimming, fishing, boating, tubing, and riflery. I loved being active all day. What is real neat is rather you are a beginner or an expert in an area its ok. The counselors help you get better. All activities are noncompetitive and so we all support each other, rather than worry who is best.

When I think of Swift, I think of trips. I’ll never forget the Superior Hiking Trail or going to Ely. What an adventure! I loved the trails, nature, and sights of the forest. It was fun getting to know the other persons that hike with you. The wildlife you see is extremely cool. We saw hawks, bald eagles, deer, ospreys, trout, and carp. This is why I love Minnesota Camps

Life in a cabin is about learning from others and with others. It is becoming a team of understanding. Sure, sometimes we had our fights or minor issues, but almost always they were resolved and we grew closer as a team for them.

The Nature Center is a great place to learn about Nature and the beautiful environment of the North woods. We always have fun this is not school. The animals in the zoo are fun to take care of, especially since my mom, back home, will only let me have a cat. It is kinda like being at an animal camp.

I’m returning to Swift Nature Camp for all these reasons. I love camp and hope to be a Counselor in training when I’m sixteen and then a counselor when I’m eighteen. So, I’ll see yawl in the North woods of Minnesota this summer!
