The Measure Tool is the best way to straighten images in Photoshop, taking all the guess work out of it. As I will show you in a moment, Photoshop will do most of the work for you as long as there’s something in the image that should be straight! By default the Measure Tool is buried behind the Eyedropper Tool in the Tools palette, so in order to select it, you need to click and hold your mouse button down on the Eyedropper Tool for a second or two. A fly-out menu appears showing you the other tools buried behind it. Select the Measure Tool by clicking on it.

First you want to look for something in your image that needs to be straightened, either horizontally or vertically. Then you want to drag along the edge of the crooked item with the Measure Tool so Photoshop has something to work with when trying to figure out how crooked the photo actually is. In this case, I will click and drag horizontally along the roof of the building directly behind Ms. Liberty. Clearly the roof should be entirely horizontal, yet it clearly isn’t at the moment. I’ll click once on the left side of the roof, then drag over to the right side of the roof. This draws a thin line between where I first clicked on the left and where I finished dragging on the right, and Photoshop uses the angle of this line to determine how far the image will need to be rotated in order to straighten it.

Using the Measure Tool click and drag along the edge of the item in the photo that should be straight horizontally or vertically. Check in the Options Bar at the top of the screen and you can see the angle of the line you’ve just drawn (it’s the number listed to the right of the letter “A”). Choose The “Rotate Canvas - Arbitrary” Command Go up to the Image menu at the top of the screen, choose Rotate Canvas, and then choose Arbitrary:

Go to Image > Rotate Canvas > Arbitrary. The word “arbitrary” actually means “random or by chance”, yet that’s exactly the opposite of what we’re doing here. Photoshop is not randomly rotating our image or leaving anything to chance. The Measure Tool was used to find out just how much of an angle our image needs to be rotated by, and now Photoshop will use the information we’ve provided to level our image without any guess work. As you probably already know, much of the problem with understanding Photoshop comes from getting around the terminology, and in this case, I’m not quite sure what Adobe was thinking.

However, life goes on. Once you click on “Arbitrary”, Photoshop pops up the Rotate Canvas dialog box, and as you can see, the work has already been done for you. In this case, Photoshop has entered a value of 1.85 for the Angle option, and it even recognized that the image needs to be rotated counter-clockwise, which is why the CCW option is also selected:

You may be wondering why Photoshop entered an angle of 1.85 when the Options Bar showed an angle of 1.9 a moment ago. The reason is because Photoshop rounds off the angles in the Options Bar to 1 decimal place, so it showed 1.9 even though the angle of the line we drew with the Measure Tool was actually 1.85. The angle shown in the Rotate Canvas dialog box is the correct angle.

Finally all we need to do is click on the OK button in the Rotate Canvas dialog box to exit and have Photoshop rotate and straighten the image for us. You should see that the image is now properly rotated and straightened. Everything looks great, and thankfully the Statue of Liberty is no longer leaning to the right. We straightened the image without any guess work thanks to the Measure Tool and the Rotate Canvas command.

Of course, there is a small problem. By rotating the image inside the document window, we’ve added some white canvas areas around the outside of the photo. We’ll need to finish things off by cropping away those areas, and for that, we can use Photoshop’s Crop Tool. Select the Crop Tool from the Tools palette, or simply press the letter C on your keyboard to select it with the shortcut:

Using the Crop Tool click near the top left corner of your image and drag down towards the bottom right to create a border around the area of the image you want to keep. You can fine-tune your selection by dragging any of corner handles or by dragging the top, bottom, left or right sides of the selection:

Use the Crop Tool to drag out a selection around the part of the image you want to keep. Once you’ve dragged out your cropping border, press Enter (Win) / Return (Mac) to have Photoshop crop the image.

You’ve finally decided that you want to build your own model railway and the train table that it will need to sit on. Often the first choice for a layout will be a table top or a sheet of plywood. Although this may seem the easiest way, it definitely has its restrictions.

The biggest concern is that everything has to be on top and nothing can be below ground level. This is when most modelers see the benefits of building a table tailor made just for any scenery or landscape they might choose.

First, you need to plan carefully the size, relative weight of different sections, and design of your new layout. If one section is more scenery intensive, it will require more attention to support. An L-girder support system has become the standard way to support your model layout, and can be adapted to almost any configuration, providing you with all the strength your layout will need.

Although L-girder bench work is very strong, it is still inexpensive. It’s very functional and goes together easily. It consists of a platform of girders, cross braces and joists that all work together. Generally the joists are 18 inches apart but they don’t always have to be evenly spaced.

Be careful in choosing the lumber for the table top as well as for the support system. You will need a flat piece for your roadbed to avoid any problems but take care in choosing the support pieces as well. Cheaper grades of lumber may eventually warp and that could spell disaster for your project.

If your layout is larger that 4 x 8 you should still keep the pieces to that size to make them easier to transport in case you want to move your layout. Use wood screws from underneath to assemble the bench work cross members as well as the support risers.

This way, you don’t have to ruin scenery when looking for some random screw lost in the trees! Make doubly careful not to split the wood in your supports by either using too large of screws or by poor placement of same.

Choose any spots carefully that you want to cut for scenery or access. Opinions vary as to whether you should saw holes in the table top before or after the track is placed.
