Reaching my Goal

Posted By Twyla on July 23, 2008 @ 4:03 pm

When I was going to tech school, I was really interested in learning about gsm encryption. We live in an ever changing technological world and I thought that it would be good business sense to keep on top of all the newer security features that were offered in the electronics that I would one day be building.

I decided to take extra classes just to learn more about encryption software. I thought it certainly would not hurt when it came time for me to look for a job. A potential employer would most likely be impressed at my knowledge in the field.

I was right. I was hired based on my knowledge of phone encryption. In fact, I spent a lot more time coming up with software plans for the company rather than building the actual phones. I ended up with a pretty sweet job and I now officially have my own office.

Macbook Air, or Not?

Posted By Jenn Brockman on June 9, 2008 @ 4:23 pm

In my search for a super thin laptop that I can take back and forth to work, I’ve found two brands that offer portability and function.

However, unless I can find a free Macbook Air, or HP Voodoo, I’m probably out of luck since my price range is way under what they retail for.

At nearly seven thousand dollars for the top of the line model, the Voodoo is not for just anyone. It does offer nearly instant access to on line functions and looks like high priced art as much as it does a laptop.

The Macbook Air, on the other hand, offers the same portability in that it is thin and light weight, but has a slightly better price.

The biggest difference is that the HP product isn’t available here in the US yet and that is a major drawback for me. I’d rather see something in person before I buy it, even it means visiting a local store, then buying on line later.

Bringing VOIP into the Office

Posted By Admin on May 20, 2008 @ 11:01 am

For the longest time, we have been using a switchboard in our office which has required us to have PIN numbers that we need to use each time we make a long distance phone call.  Though it does work okay, it can be rather tedious having to input the PIN number each time you make a call.

But there looks like there might be hope on the horizon.  You see, the switchboard hasn’t been working so well lately and management has been considering scrapping it and getting something new.

Specifically, they are looking to buy some Asterisk hardware to replace the aging switchboard and move into the twenty first century.  We will also benefit from the VOIP long distance that the hardware will provide, and it will reduce the costs for the company.

I think that once they have upgraded the hardware, we will be having training sessions on how to use it.  It will be nice to have something change at work - there is just too much of a routine here.

Living a Mobile Life

Posted By Admin on May 19, 2008 @ 4:08 pm

One of my favorite things with the way that the world has become is that you can be more mobile, yet stay connected.  Sure, you can use a notebook computer to accomplish this, but honestly, even using my notebook doesn’t seem to be that convenient.

I would have to say that I am thankful that someone felt the same way when they made it so that cell phones could surf the Internet as well.  In fact, I love to surf mobile sites whenever I get the chance.

Sure, a mobile website is not as complete as the real thing, but honestly, it saves me from getting distracted.  I can just get what I need to get done, and get on with my life.

Also, I just can’t complain at all - it gives me something to do on the long bus ride to work.  I love living a mobile life.

Outsourcing Our IT Department

Posted By Admin on April 30, 2008 @ 3:49 pm

I know that most people don’t care for companies that outsource departments of their business.  But for the small company that we operate, it really didn’t make much sense to have many different staff for positions that we needed, but were not critical to our success.

Many of those departments such as Payroll, Human Resources, and our IT support were smart departments to outsource.  Though we did need the resources presented by specialists in these areas, we didn’t need them all the time.

The biggest example was our IT department.  It seems that we rarely have an IT problem (knock on wood), but when we do, all we have to do is pick up the phone and someone will help us out.  It has definitely made a difference to the bottom line of our company by reducing our staffing expenses.

It is nice too that our employees understand the reasoning behind the outsourcing - it makes the workplace a friendlier environment when they know we are not trying to get rid of them.

Looking Up A Cell Phone Number

Posted By Admin on March 22, 2008 @ 11:31 pm

I just recently purchased a cell phone and I love it.  I have tons of minutes, call display and message manager.  It is also a sweet phone that I can talk and text to everyone that I know.

But not everything is as good as it could be.  You see, someone has been calling me ten or twenty times per day, and they always hang up when I answer the phone.  At first it was annoying, but now it just makes me angry.

Thing is, there is no name that comes up on my number display - just a number.  So I decided that I could use a cell phone number lookup service to see who it was calling me.  Using the reverse cellular phone directory was easy, and I found out who was calling me - an ex-girlfriend.

I think I might have to get a restraining order, or at least talk to the cell phone company and explain the situation.  At least I now know who has been calling - and I can do something about it.

Prepared for the next Oops!

Posted By Admin on March 21, 2008 @ 12:01 pm

I had mentioned a little while back how I managed to have problems with a Linux computer I own - and how I managed to lose the data on it.  Well, history has repeated itself, but this time, it is my Windows based notebook that is the problem.

I don’t know what happened, but the computer was working perfectly one day, and then the next day all my data was gone.  All I could do is feel the stress and frustration rising - things were not supposed to turn out this way.

But I had a plan.

Since I had the mishap last time, I had purchased some of the best data recovery software on the market just in case something like this happened again.  I had passed on just getting photo recovery software and instead purchased Recovery My Files, a full fledged data recovery software package.

It was as simple as installing the software and running the wizard - the software did the rest.  I am happy to report I was able to restore everything - but I think I will make a backup this time just in case it happens again.

My Dirty Old Machine

Posted By Twyla on March 15, 2008 @ 11:49 am

I decided that I would check into some different registry cleaner software reviews. I have been having a lot of trouble with my computer crashing and I thought that if I got a registry cleaner, it may help my windows to run more efficiently. I am sure that there is a lot of garbage on there that doesn’t need to be there.

I was especially impressed with the RegCure review that I read. The one review stated that they had found over three hundred registry mistakes on a new machine. That is pretty high. I am scared to see how many it might find on mine. It will probably tell me to go and throw my computer into the river for maximum utilization.

I know that for sure I need Registry Mechanic to do a thorough clean up job on my computer. I am hoping that this will solve all of my problems and that my computer will quit crashing. After all, it can’t hurt it, even if it doesn’t cure it.

Hooked On Technology

Posted By Twyla on March 14, 2008 @ 7:11 pm

I went to a technology show with a friend not too long ago. I am not that much into technology, but he wanted someone to go with and I decided that I might find something interesting to look at. One of the displays really caught my attention and I pretty much spent the rest of the day there. It was an OLED introduction. I had never heard of this before and I was hooked instantly.

I am not that much into technology, but I do love my TV. There was an 11 inch OLED on display at the booth and the picture was so wonderful that I would have traded my 36 inch LCD TV in for the 11 inch right then and there. When I told my wife this, she was amazed because I really love my LCD.

I had to find out a lot more about this new technology. I just could not get enough of learning about AMOLED and other types of organic light emitting diodes. I was finally fascinated with something technological and my friend was excited that I was so into something that interested him.

Respect My Privacy

Posted By Twyla on March 8, 2008 @ 7:27 pm

The past two months of my life have been a living hell. The reason for this is that I always thought that my family respected me and my property. What happened is that they put a keystroke logger on my computer to trace my every online move. I wish above all things that I had ever done, that I had installed privacy software before they did this.

I know that if I had installed an Anonymizer way back when I bought my computer, my family never would have found out that I had been having an affair. But, I didn’t, and they found out. My husband and my two teenage daughters made my life a living hell and basically kicked me out of the house with a garbage bag full of clothes.

I have learned from my mistakes, though and I now have ParetoLogic Privacy Controls installed on my computer and I do not let anyone else touch it. At least I know the controls are in place if someone does, but since I have no nosy husband or daughters anymore, I am free to be me.
